During key new‑moon periods throughout the year, numerous marine organisms choose this time to reproduce.

On September 10, 2026, during one such new moon, we documented sea anemone spawning behaviour in Bunaken National Marine Park.

Most sea anemones in the ocean are gonochoristic, meaning individuals are either male or female, yet their sex cannot be told apart by appearance.

As shown in the video, mature sea anemones release sperm and eggs into seawater for external fertilisation.

Someday in the future, larvae will hatch, sink down to the seabed, attach themselves to the substrate, and grow into young sea anemones within Bunaken National Park.
